Isabel González
Name: Isabel González
Description:
She was a poet mentioned in the Cancionero de Baena whose skill was recognized by some relevant authors of the same anthology, like Francisco Imperial. Although we have not conserved any poem attributed to her, there are some poetic debates that show a reationship between Isabel and two poets of the Cancionero de Baena: Imperial himself and Diego Martínez de Medina. This sevillian lady was the mistress of Juan Alfonso de Guzmán, Count of Niebla, and she joined the Convent of San Clemente, probably, after the death of the count, in 1396. She might have taken vows, because Beatriz de Guzmán, the widow of the count, who lived in the same monastery after the death of her husband, left 500 maravedis to a nun named Isabel González. She could have had a significant influence in the cultural environment of the Niebla family.
